pregnant dotty, getting dressed, and going to work

maternity at work_small

If you've ever attempted to buy work clothes to accommodate a bump, you understand that while it is very easy to look comfortable, looking professional is a whole other story.  I relied very heavily on my jacket collection because even when my shoes stopped fitting, my jackets still did.  (Unbuttoned, of course!)  I was still doing site visits for one of my projects up until my last week, so just imagine those skinny pants paired with steel-toed boots.  Also imagine a bunch of construction workers being very nervous when a super pregnant lady shows up in a hard hat and asks a bunch of questions.

Anywho, my top pregnant-but-still-professional outfit combinations...

[one and two] patterned jacket+maternity dress: One of my co-workers who was pregnant with her second clued me in to the wonderfulness of the Liz Lange maternity dresses at Target.  They are definitely casual on their own, but with a necklace and jacket they clean up pretty nicely.

[three and four] jacket+maternity wrap dress: I bought a wrap dress in December and wore it until April because it was wonderfully expandable.

[five, six, and seven] skinny maternity pants+maternity tee+jacket: I tried really hard to find maternity dress pants, but it was just a disaster.  If the legs worked then the belly band would be itchy or tight or for someone carrying quadruplets.  Or vice versa.  I found these skinny pants at H&M fairly early on and bought a second pair to make it through.

dotty, pink-ness, and leftover maternity clothes

pink jacket outfit [wearing]
jacket: h&m
top: asos
jeans: joe's jeans
shoes: vince
bag: rebecca minkoff

[three things]
1. Oh look, an outfit post! These might be few and far between, but here's one to start things off anyway.

2. I'm wearing a maternity shirt.  (Shhh!)  I cleared out 95% of my maternity clothes right after Maddie was born, but I kept a few tops that weren't obviously maternity.

3. Pink!  We painted the accent wall in the kiddo's room a pink pattern and ever since I've been more open to the more blush-ish pink tones.  And well, I definitely don't need any more black blazers in rotation!

our little madeline

Oh, hellooooo!  I took a bit of a break there and now (presto-chango) I'm a mama!

Some people really enjoy being pregnant.  I am not one of those people.  Every single day I was amazed by my body's ability to grow a human, but also felt incredibly unlike myself.  I also had some transportation issues since I had trouble with planes, trains, automobiles, (and buses) making me feel absolutely awful.  My job unfortunately involved a lot of site visits and meetings in the first few months before I announced my pregnancy, so there were a lot of pep talks to myself that went something like "you just have to not throw up and sound passably knowledgeable during this train ride, three meetings, and client lunch and then you can go home and eat watermelon in your pajamas."  Apart from me feeling icky, I had no pregnancy complications whatsoever up until the very end.  So as a worrier, I had it really quite good.

Fast forward to thirty-six weeks and six days when I had my regular  appointment on a Friday afternoon with my midwife and got sent to the hospital for some blood pressure monitoring due to some minor maybe-could-be-something symptoms.  We stopped for donuts on the way and I even told a stranger in the waiting room that I still had a month to go.  A few episodes of SVU later, I officially had severe preeclampsia and my hospital team had decided that it was baby time.  Fourteen hours and many buckets of ice chips later I was holding our perfect, tiny Madeline.  I had a really awful first night with a hemorrhage and more blood pressure problems, but my veins got their act together so we could both be discharged on schedule.  It was very much not the birth I had planned for, but two months later I have finally come to terms with it, and am so thankful for the midwives, doctors, and nurses that were part of it.  And really, how amazing is it that my husband and I now have this adorable human that's a combination of the two of us?  There are not enough heart-eyes emojis to express how much I love this little family of mine.

So, let's rewind to last August for a giant photo recap!
